Graduate Programs in Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law

Admission Requirements

Applicants to either the thesis-based or the course-based LLM programs or to the Post-baccalaureate Certificate program must meet both the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Law admission requirements set out below. A maximum of ten (10) new students may be admitted into the thesis-based LLM stream each September. Between ten (10) and twenty (20) new students may be admitted into the course-based LLM stream each year. There is no limit on the number of Post-baccalaureate Certificate students admitted each year.

Faculty of Graduate Studies Admission Requirements: 

a) All applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (on a 4-point system) in the final two years. Attainment of this standard will ensure consideration of the candidate but in no way guarantees admission which is competitive in nature and limited to number of available places.  

b) When English is not the native language, a minimum TOEFL Internet (ibT) score of 100, of which the combined reading, listening and writing component must be 75. The minimum score for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is 7.0 with a reading and writing band minimum of 7.0.  The successful completion of Tier 3 of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program will fulfill the English language requirement.  Please visit the English for Academic Purposes website.

Faculty of Law Admission Requirements:

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies admission requirements, the Faculty of Law requires:

a) A first academic degree in law; 

b) When English is not the native language, a minimum TOEFL Internet (ibT) score of 100, of which the combined reading, listening and writing component must be 75. The minimum score for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is 7.0 with a reading and writing band minimum of 7.0.  The successful completion of Tier 3 of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program will fulfill the English language requirement.  Please visit the English for Academic Purposes website. Successful completion of a University of Calgary Faculty of Law Post-baccalaureate Certificate will satisfy English language requirements for LLM applicants. .

An on-line application form for our thesis-based or course-based LLM programs is available, as is an on-line application form for our Certificate program. 

Letters of Reference Package: 

An on-line Letters of Reference Package (WORD format) is available.

Application Fee:

The non-refundable fee for applying to a graduate program is $100 CDN for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and $130 CDN for international students.  

Application Deadlines:

  • Thesis-based LLM applications are accepted for September admission only and the deadline is December 15th.   
  • Course-based LLM and Post-baccalaureate Certificate applications are accepted for September and January admission.  Deadline for September admission is December 15th each year.  The deadline for January admission is July 15th each year. 

Please note that an LLM does not entitle the holder to practice law in Canada.  For more information on admission to the bar in Canada with a foreign law degree visit the website of the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA).
