CIRL Post-Graduate Fellowships

The Canadian Institute of Resources Law (CIRL) has long supported the graduate program at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law through student supervision, international student scholarships and conference travel funding. In consultation with the Faculty of Law, CIRL has decided to redirect some of its financial support for graduate students to post-graduate fellowships.

Post-graduate fellowships are intended to provide support to graduate students who have completed their thesis or major paper at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law and who wish to work towards the publication of their graduate research. Post-graduate fellows will be provided with office space at CIRL, as well as a stipend of $3750 / month for 2 months. One post-graduate fellowship will be available each year for a total financial commitment of $7500 annually.

Criteria

Applications for post-graduate fellowships will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence
  • Publication record
  • Prospects for publication of the graduate research
  • Completion or expected completion date of graduate degree requirements (if in the thesis program, the thesis defence date should already be scheduled and if in the course based program, a final version of the major paper should already have been submitted),
  • Support of the thesis / major paper supervisor

The Committees assessing applications may also take into account need for financial support and full-time student status.

Application Process

Interested students should apply to the Graduate Program Director of the Faculty of Law by submitting the following:

  • a curriculum vitae
  • a proposal for publication of the graduate research, including journals / publishers where the work will be submitted and an outline of the proposed publication(s)
  • a letter of support from the applicant's supervisor
  • the intended start date for the fellowship.

Applications will be accepted on April 1, August 1 and December 1 each year (or the next business date in case of a holiday). The Faculty of Law's Graduate Studies Committee will review applications and provide a shortlist to CIRL's Scholarship Committee for final decision.
