Conference/Internship Funding

Conference and Internship Funding Policy  (June 2009)

The Faculty of Law generally does not provide funding for graduate student travel to conferences. Students are advised to investigate the following options:

  • The Canadian Institute of Resources Law (CIRL) has a $5000 fund to support student attendance at conferences. A maximum of $750 per year per student can be awarded. Applications should be made well before the conference to Owen Saunders, Executive Director of CIRL, c/o Pat Albrecht (palbrech@ucalgary.ca) and should include a budget, information about the conference and its importance to the student's research, and a note of support from the student's Supervisor or the Graduate Program Director.
  • The University Research Grants Committee (URGC) supports full time graduate students (Canadian and international) in research based programs to present their research at conferences to a maximum of $1200. The deadlines for applications for Graduate Conference Travel grants are April 1 and October 1 each year, and students must apply before the date of the conference. For more information on this funding, see: http://www.ucalgary.ca/research/funding/internalgrants/forms/. This funding is currently under review.
  • The new Graduate Travel Grants program was announced by the Alberta government in November 2008. Funding of up to $1200 is available for students who are: registered full-time in a thesis based program, are presenting their research at an important national or international conference, are Canadian Citizens or lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence, and living in Alberta. Deadline for applications was December 3, 2008. For more information on this funding, see http://www.ucalgary.ca/research/files/Grad%20Travel%20Guide%202008-09_0.doc. It is unknown if this program will be available in 2009.
  • If a student has exhausted all of these options and does not have sufficient funding to attend a conference where they are presenting their own research, the Graduate Program Director, in consultation with the student's supervisor and members of the Graduate Studies Committee, may provide funding to the student if funds are available. Criteria to be considered include the student's academic performance and status in the program, the connection between the conference presentation and the student's thesis research, and the student's financial need.
