Differential Fee Revenue Policy
Use of Graduate Student Differential Fee Revenue Policy (26 April 2005)
The Faculty of Law agrees to comply with the Faculty of Graduate Studies’ "Principles and Procedures Guiding Use of Graduate Student Visa Differential Revenue - April 2004."
The Faculty of Law policy with respect to the use of graduate student differential fee revenue is:
- Graduate student differential fee revenue (“GSDFR”) means the revenue that the Faculty receives from the University of Calgary in September and February of each fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) in respect of the differential portion of the tuition fees paid by or on behalf of its international graduate students. “Adjusted GSDFR” means the GSDFR minus any revenue described in paragraph 4.
- The Faculty of Law will pay the adjusted GSDFR to those of its international students who (a) were enrolled in the LL.M. program in the fiscal year for which the revenue is paid, and (b) paid differential tuition fees. The adjusted GSDFR will be divided amongst those students in the same proportion that their individual differential tuition fee payment bears to the total of differential fees paid by all LL.M. students. For example, if one international LL.M. student paid differential fees of $3,000 in a fiscal year and the total amount of differential fees paid by all international LL.M. students that fiscal year was $15,000, then that student would receive twenty (20%) percent of the adjusted GSDFR. Payment of the adjusted GSDFR will be made in October and March of each year, based on the revenue received by the faculty in September and February, respectively.
- If an international student’s differential tuition fee was paid by the student’s supervisor, then payment will be made to the supervisor rather than to the student.
- If a student’s differential tuition fee was paid by the student’s government or employer or another sponsoring organization, then that student’s share of the GSDFR will be used to support graduate students, Canadian and international, selected by the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Committee on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
