Graduate Scholarships

Faculty of Law Graduate Scholarships are generally available only to full-time students in the thesis-based LLM program.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies also has a number of scholarships for which students can apply, and an open scholarship competition each spring for which the Faculty of Law puts forward recommendations. The Honourable N.D. McDermid Graduate Scholarships in Law

DONOR: McDermid Law Fund in memory of the late Honourable Neil Douglas McDermid, Q.C. who was a prominent member of the legal profession of Alberta and the Calgary community for many years.

VALUE: $12,000

NUMBER: Maximum Two

DURATION: One year, not renewable.

ELIGIBILITY: Offered annually to students entering or enrolled in a full-time graduate program in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. If, in the opinion of the University of Calgary Graduate Scholarship Committee, no suitable applications are received, no awards will be made.

WHERE TENABLE: University of Calgary

APPLY: Awards will be recommended by a Committee of the Faculty of Law based upon academic excellence and proven ability in the area of study. The awards will be subject to the approval of the University of Calgary Graduate Scholarship Committee.

Faculty of Law Graduate Scholarship

SOURCE OF FUNDS: Contributions made to the Focus on Natural Resources Law Campaign; matching grant provided from the Province of Alberta.

FIELD OF STUDY: Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law.

VALUE: Up to $10,000

NUMBER: One

DURATION: One year, not renewable.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to graduate students who are registered in or admissible to a full-time graduate program in the Faculty of Law. If, in the opinion of the University of Calgary Graduate Scholarship Committee, no suitable applications are received, no awards will be made.

WHERE TENABLE: The Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary.

APPLY: Awards will be recommended by a Committee of the Faculty of Law based upon academic excellence and proven ability in the area of study. The awards will be subject to the approval of the University of Calgary Graduate Scholarship Committee

John D. Petrie Q.C. Graduate Scholarship in Law

Mary H. Petrie had a long and generous relationship with the University of Calgary and established many awards in tribute to her late husband, John D. Petrie Q.C. This scholarship honours her commitment to graduate education and the University of Calgary.

FIELD OF STUDY: Law.

VALUE: $10,000

NUMBER: One

DURATION: Two years

ELIGIBILITY: Open to students registered full-time in a graduate program in the Faculty of Law

WHERE TENABLE: University of Calgary, Faculty of Graduate Studies

COMPETITION: Recommended by Program

APPLY: Students interested in the award should consult the Faculty of Law. A recommendation will be forwarded to the Graduate Scholarship Office. The recommendation is subject to final approval of the Graduate Scholarship Committee.

John Ballem Q.C. LL.D. Post Graduate Fellowship in Energy Law

John Ballem, Q.C., was a strong supporter of the Faculty of Law and its academic programs.  Grace Ballem has generously donated $10,000 to be awarded annually for this fellowship.  This fellowship honours John Ballem’s contributions to the Calgary oil and gas legal community.

FIELD OF STUDY: Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law

VALUE: $10,000 

NUMBER: One

DURATION: Three months ($3333 a month commitment)

ELIGIBILITY: Open to thesis and course based LLM post-graduate and near to completion graduate students in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary.  

SELECTION CRITERIA: Applications for post-graduate fellowships will be assessed on the following criteria: academic excellence; publication record; prospects for publication of the graduate research; completion or expected completion of graduate degree requirements (if in the thesis program, the thesis defense date should already be scheduled and if in the course based program a final version of the major paper should already have been submitted); and support of the thesis/major paper supervisor.  The committee assessing applications make also take into account need for financial support and full-time student status.

WHERE TENABLE: The Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary.

APPLY:  Interested students should apply to the Graduate Program Director of the Faculty of Law by submitting the following:

  • a curriculum vitae including publication record
  • a description of their thesis research or major paper in the area of energy, natural resources, or environmental law, and a proposal for publication of the graduate research, including journals / publishers where the work will be submitted
  • a support letter or email from the applicant’s supervisor
  • an indication of when the applicant can commence the Fellowship (for 2011, ideally in November 2011)

A recommendation will be forwarded to the Graduate Scholarship Office. The recommendation is subject to final approval of the Graduate Scholarship Committee.

Canadian Institute for Resources Law Post Graduate Fellowship

DURATION: One year, not renewable

ELIGIBILITY: Open to full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. Selection will be based on academic excellence and proven ability of the applicant in the area of study.  To support publication of thesis or major paper. 

WHERE TENABLE: The Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary.

APPLY: Awards will be recommended to the Canadian Institute of Resources Law by a committee of the Faculty of Law based upon academic excellence and proven ability of the applicant in the area of study. The awards will be subject to the approval of the Canadian Institute of Resources Law.

CLOSING DATE: April 1, August 1, December 1

 


Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation Scholarship Program

The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation (RMMLF) Scholarship Program is open to LLB and Graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to study natural resources law, or who is undertaking the study of natural resouces law. The RMMLF offer a number of different programs, from travel reimbursement and networking programs, to tuition scholarships. Hard copies of some application forms are available in the student services office on the second-floor of Murray Fraser Hall. The RMMLF Scholarship Program was established in 1993 to encourage study of natural resources law by well-qualified law students who have the potential to make significant contirbutions to scholarship in natural resources law. The RMMLF Scholarship Program was recently increased from $70,000.00 to $200,000.00 annually.

The University of Calgary law school is one of the governing organizations of the RMMLF of Denver, Colorado. The Foundation, founded in 1955 by representatives of Mining and Oil and Gas Associations, State Bar Associations, and US and Canadian Law Schools with Natural Resources Law Programs, presents a major annual conference, a wide range of seminars and short courses, as well as a wide menu of publications. It operates in the US and internationally.
