Geomatics Engineering welcomes Dr. Ismael Foroughi

Assistant Professor in Geodesy
Ismael Foroughi

Dr. Ismael Foroughi joins the Department of Geomatics Engineering with internationally recognized expertise in geodesy and gravity field modelling. He earned his PhD in Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and maintains strong connections across the Canadian and international geodetic community through active research collaborations, including his roles as Adjunct Professor at the University of New Brunswick and York University and Canada’s delegate to International Association of Geodesy.

Before joining the department, Dr. Foroughi worked as a Geodetic Engineer at Natural Resources Canada and led provincial scale projects in British Columbia, contributing directly to national and regional gravity field models, geoid development, and datum transformation. In parallel, he worked with private industry to improve their capacity to design airborne gravity surveys, integrate satellite and terrestrial gravity data, and apply gravity field information to engineering, mapping, and geophysical problems, drawing on computational methods from computer science to deliver operational solutions.

Dr. Foroughi has secured competitive research funding, mentored graduate students who have progressed to doctoral studies, and designed and taught advanced courses in geodesy, gravity field modelling, and GIS. His current research is pushing the boundaries of applied gravity, exploring innovative approaches for engineering, environmental monitoring, and climate studies, while integrating emerging quantum sensing technologies into operational geodetic workflows. He has served as President of the Geodesy Section of the Canadian Geophysical Union and currently serves as Vice President of the CGU, contributing to national coordination and international leadership in geodetic science.
