JD Referee Information

Information for Referees

Thank you very much for acting as a referee to support an application to UCalgary Law. UCalgary Law conducts a comprehensive assessment of applications; thoughtful comments and a frank assessment of your experiences with the applicant are greatly appreciated.

References are only used for upper-year (Transfer, LOP, and IELP) applications to the JD program. References are no longer used for first-year admissions.

How to submit your reference

References are provided through the Online Reference Form, accessed through the unique link in your email.

Space is provided within the online reference form to provide additional comments, up to approximately 500 words. A separate refence letter cannot be added to the application.

If you have any problems accessing the online reference form, you can instead email a completed PDF version of the form to law@ucalgary.ca.

Reference submission deadlines

The deadline will also appear in the email you received, in the following format: YYYY-MM-DD

4 tips for submitting your reference

Your link to the Online Reference Form is unique

Your link to the Online Reference Form is unique to both you and a specific applicant.

  • If you have agreed to act as a referee for multiple applicants, please be very careful that you are providing a reference for the correct applicant.
  • Since each link is unique, do not forward your link to the applicant’s other referee, or you will not be able to submit your own reference.

Sign out of PeopleSoft/Oracle

Sign out of PeopleSoft/Oracle before clicking on the link in your email

  • If you did not sign out of PeopleSoft/Oracle, you will get the following error message: “You are not authorized for this page.”
  • An alternative option would be to copy/paste the link into a different browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) than the one you have already signed into.

All comments must be included in the Online Reference Form

  • A separate letter cannot be added to the application.

Don’t forget to save at least every 15 minutes

Don’t forget to save at least every 15 minutes and click “submit” when you are done

  • Unsaved data cannot be recovered.
  • You will not be able to view or edit your reference after clicking “submit.”
  • You will receive an email confirmation after successfully submitting the Online Reference Form. The applicant will be copied on the confirmation email.

Consent to provide a reference

You have received a reference request email because an applicant named listed you as a referee in their application to the JD program at UCalgary Law. The applicant’s name can be found in the email you received.

Applicants are asked to obtain your consent before providing your name and contact information to us. If you did not provide your consent and cannot provide a reference on behalf of the applicant, you may let us know by emailing law@ucalgary.ca.

Notice to referees

Please note that the applicant will be provided with a copy of this reference upon submission of a written request.
